When is the last day to turn in points? Nov. 12? I made a spreadsheet to keep track of my daily points if anyone is interested just holler. Have a great day of eating more veggies and fruit and exercising!!
The last day to turn in points is Nov 12. We hope you send points to Dani Crist each Thursday so we can encourage everyone to keep progressing. It was great to see the trunout at the Kickoff last night. Remember, 10 points for registering. 100 points need to be accumulated to be in the drawing for for individual prizes. I have had 4 points since last night: all eating fruits and vegetables. The best medicine is tonight with exercise.
I walked to work on this National Walk to School Day since I did not have a child to walk to school. I have been hitting the fruits and vegetables hard to keep up with the more athletic Hal Hoxie and Dennis Shaw. So far, I have eaten servings of apparagus, apples, bananas, cabbage, orange, peach, pear, strawberries, and a fresh mixed friut salad. I have not had brussel sprouts yet. I hope Brett Reber is not still eating abnormally.
So far 178 individuals have registered and I have 25 team rosters!
Way to go McPherson!
If you haven’t registered yet please register and if you haven’t submitted your team roster yet, please do so!

Thanks for the great info Alana!!! We should work to have 200 or more people by the end of the first week. Remember, signup is ongoing throughout the challenge: start early or at least start.
This challenge has already opened my eyes to the fact that I have not been eating enough vegetables. Fruit is no problem, but those veggies are my target the next 5 weeks. I’ll be turning in points tonight….78!!! Let’s go Mac!!! Commit to get fit!
Great work on your “Commit to Get Fot” Honor. You have a good point total at 78. You may be a bigger threat than Dennis Shaw or Hal Howie. I have eaten grapes, broccoli, peas, and corn since my last report. I will be sending out a brussel sprouts recipe soon. Point point total is only 54. Honor is racing way ahead of me.
It was a great community walk tonight. It may have been as many as 70+. I stopped counting at 64 and several came later. Three cheers for Commisioner Bob Moore as he is in the hunt. Here is a roasted fresh vegetable recipe: Brush olive or canola oil on cookie sheet; chop in bite-size chunks 1 turnip, 1 zuchinni, 1 medium onion, 1 yellow squash, 2 carrots, 6 new red potatoes, , 2 cups of fresh green beans, and 12 fresh brussel sprouts. Brush with olive or canola oil, sprinkle with herbs then roast in oven at 350 degrees unitl tender or to firmness you like. Add mushrooms and 3 medium tomatoes 3 minutes before you take out of oven. Delicious!!!!
Hope everyone has turned in their points for this week. I ended the first four days with 72 points including 21 servings of vegetables. Today, friday, I finally ate BRUSSEL SPROUTS. The hospital cafeteria was serving them and I received a call so I went hand bought several serving of them. I will have brussel sprout breathe to beat back Gardener-Edgerton fans at the football game. My physical activity is picking up so Hal Howie may be in trouble.
I heard you are what you eat. Looking a little green to me.
97 Miles on the bike this weekend. Would have been easier to walk the dog for 7 hrs.
Keep up the good work. Lots of people at the Community walks.
Da Mayor – I’m trying….2 cups of veggies with fish tonight for dinner. Did them on the grill! Cha ching, give me 4 points for that! Woo hoo!
What is round and green? Ans: Da Mayor!! Tomorrow I finsh my supply of brussels spouts. They are round and green so if I am what I eat, I am too. Recipe: Boil a pound of fresh brussels sprouts. Sautee 2/3 pound of fresh mushrooms on extra virgin olive oil with one minced clove of garlic and 1/2 cup of onion. Dreain the brussel sprouts really well then mix everything together and feast!!! If your cholestrol is okay add 4 strips of crisp bacon to the mix. We had 54 at the Turkey Creek Community Walk on Sunday. Approximately 50-52 for the lecture: Exercise the best medicine by Dr. Thomas. You should have seen Susan Balding lead the group in the Hokey Pokey and Maxine Wallace relax us with Tai Chi. We are over 250 registrants. Come on Mac-Commit to Get Fit>
Again, I have exhibited a lack of keyboard skills.
I was excited that you spelled my last name correctly!!!
One bag of salad (6 cups) topped with cheese and diced chicken equals 12 points. Plus I find it very filling. Do I get exercise points for trying to eat that much without having upper teeth? Walking an hour a day, eating lots and lots of salad, I am on my way to the top.
Last night’s lecture was very good too! Lots of good educating going on for everyone!
There were around 40 people who attended.
Congratulations!! Many of you are doing great. McBleach does not get extra points for eating a full bag of salad. Brent Reber did a great job with Zumba!! He can shake a tail feather and all the other feathers to the Latin music. Where is Hal Hoxie? Alana Murphy and Susan Balding have provided great support to the programm. Keep eating your fruits and vegies and exercise at least 30 minutes daily. McPherson is becoming a healthier city day by day.
whaddya mean where’s Hal Hoxie! I’m busy working out and eating your brussel sprouts…..
Mr Mayor, how bout we go one on one? Air Force guy vs a Marine? I accept your offer at 1$ per point…..loser pays the difference in points/dollars to the CCC student government activity fund?
Remember: Eat well and don’t get cheated out of your fair share…:-)
Good to hear from you junior bird man. Have you been walking a path in airport concourses. What airline serves brussel sprouts? Maybe you were given moldy peanuts left over from the days when real snacks were served. I am glad to receive your blog comment. As an old disabled war veteran, I will try to eat more fruits and vegetables than physical activity points you pile up. If you are in town Thursday at 6:00pm, I will see you at the community park starting at the Water Park.
We are beginning the 4th week of Commit to Get Fit. I hope you have changed your lifestyle at least a little. The real challenge is each day to use good nutrition guideline and the best medicine: exercise. We should be using these six weeks to build new, healthy habits. The teams at Central Christian College and Honor Smith have become aware of healthy diet especially vegetables. I am trying to get a few points each day to overcome arthritis and numerous old sports injuries and war wounds. Susan Balding is competing to neutralize arthritis. I would like to see a few more people post comments about lifestyle changes. It is okay to compete and have fun but, the real benefit is to achieve a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. Let’s encourage each other to live a healthy lifestyle.
Mayor’s Guidelines:
2.5 cups or 5 servings of vegetables
2.0 cups or 4 servings of fruits
2-3 servings (3-4 oz. per serving of meats and fish)
Limit your intake of starches
Drink 8 8oz glasses of water.
Exercise 30-60 minutes daily (Break time up into 10-15 minute segments, its okay)
Pray and read God’s Word daily
Tell someone you love them daily
The mayor has given some great guidelines to follow for a healthy lifestyle. Just got back from a community walk at Wall Park. We had a nice turn out. Thanks to all of you that came. You just have to love the weather we have been having. One suggestion that I wanted to post was to spend a few minutes at the beginning of your week to think about what activities you are going to do for that week. Look at the weather forecast for the week and see what the possibilities are for outside activities. Look at your responsibilities at home, work, etc. and come up with a plan for the week. Write things down if you have to so you remember what your goals are for the week. Remember the goal is to find something active to do most every day of the week. If you can plug in some time for some weight lifting 2-3 times a week that would be good too. You are doing great McPherson!! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Dani for giving us some solid advice. We will be changing the time of the Community Walk Nov 7 to 4:30pm as it will be getting dark earlier with the time change. I am working to achieve the “Daily Dozen” through the final weeks of the challenge so I can keep going after the challenge is over. Hope to see many of you for the the lecture tomorrow evening, Monday, at 7:00pm at the hospital. The topic is “What to eat when you commit to get fit”.
Mr Mayor, how many points can you get for golfing?
Mr. Mayor, I am enjoying the wellness program for the most part. My best veggie eating this past week was a salad with raw organic brocoli chopped in the food processor with red onion, low fat cheddar cheese and dried cranberries. Then it had a dressing of honey, plain yogurt. I still have a half cup left for tomorrow. My favorite workout is riding my bike across town but it only takes 40 min. these days so have to do some walking, too. Also, I am lifting some hand weights which is good as usually I only do that in the winter. My favorite way to eat vegies is to saute them in one teaspoon olive oil and I do my own mixing of vegies and fresh vegies are the only way I will eat them. For example, I mix halved cherry tomatoes, a sliced yellow squash, red onion, and some fresh spinach. I then season it with the garlic pepper grinder.Good eating and joyful exercising!
President Hoxie,
Points for golfing is dependent on your skill level and whether you are riding in a cart or walking. Waling gets a point for every 15 minutes golfing. Cart golf gets zero. The worse your golfing skills to greater the point if walking. I may have to play all day to get a head of you.
Da Mayor
Lynnae Applequist posted a great comment above. How are others doing?
Da Mayor
Suzanne Flemming did a good job last night at the last lecture series.
Food education is really good for us!
We may start seeing more people in the grocery store aisles reading labels!
I counted 32 in attendance.
Go McPherson!
I go on vacation and then end up sick, one week completely messed up on the challenge. I’ve missed you guys and have missed a lot of points. I’m going to have to push myself hard the last 2 weeks! Love the veggie ideas, thanks to all that have shared. We like to cut up whatever veggies we have, put them in tin foil, maybe a TBS of olive oil, pepper them and grill for 40 minutes. Eat them right out of the tin foil, toss the wrapper and go for a walk!
There is much data out there that points to the fact that walking is one of the best things people can do to remain fit. Check out the resources at this website….http://walking.about.com/
Hal,
Thanks for the website on walking. It is good to know walking is one of the the best exercises as that is all the faster I can go these days. Kathy and I walked from our house to the Opera House to see the Vienna Boys Choir last night. We walked home after their performance. We need to use walking as a preferred transportation method more. We usually walked in China. Our city is small enough to walk much more.
I dont know about everyone else, but my results are as follows:
I have only lost about 5 pounds but I did loose 2 inches from the waist.
My blood sugars are getting back to normal.
I find myself making healthier food choices when I go out to eat. I am still struggling on snacks that will not elevate my blood sugars. Raw veggies are out cause I dont have upper teeth. I can only eat so much sugar free pudding. Any other ideas out there?
Keep up the good work McPherson!
You are doing terrific McBleach. Have you thought of putting fruits and vegetables in a blender or cooking to soften them. It would be better than pudding,
Da Mayor
We had a great time at water aerobics last night. Thanks to Kathy, our instructor, and to Dawn Loving and the Y for allowing people to participate in a class. Water exercise is very invigorating and very good for your body. If you didn’t get a chance to participate contact the Y and check out class times for water aerobics, lap swimming, etc. Try something new, your body will thank you. We are winding down with CTGF activities. The 5K Walk/Run is tomorrow, the 6th, starting at the YMCA. We have a community walk at 4:30 at the Turkey Creek Golf Course on Sunday the 7th. Then we end with a community walk on the 11th and the wrap up ceremony on the 14th. Keep up the healthy eating and exercise!!
Here we are on the last week. The time is changing and also what fruits and vegies are available in the store. I am looking forward to eating some good oranges and grapefruit but will wait till they are really in season. I did buy some cranberries but the only way I eat them is in a cranberry muffin receipe. Pumpkin is big too but need sugar to eat it. However, I do substitute pumpkin for the butter in a receipe. Try it for even part of the butter. I have ate some pears lately. Then today I bought me a can of those fancy peas, you know the good kind. I have lost 2 pounds through this program and excited about it. When you are my age and only 5 foot 1, 2 pounds is good. Looking forward to the community walk tomorrow, Sunday!
